``Ichiban isn't what it used to be. Sadly this restaurant, which used to be one of our favorites, is going downhill.

``We visited for lunch the other day. They were a little busy, most tables were filled, or dirty, which is not unusual during the lunch hour, so we sat at the bar. One of the placemats was dirty and chopstick wrappers were still sitting there. We got no attention from the single waitress. After about five minutes the sushi chef handed us a couple menus.

``We waited for over 30 minutes and got absolutely no service. The single waitress - who was apparently also doing the cooking in the back kitchen and also handling telephone orders - never even looked our way. Two parties came in after us and didn't even get menus. The table behind us waited a good 30 minutes to get their check. We finally walked out, having wasted most of our lunch hour waiting.

``This was once a place where you could get good sushi and Japanese food, promptly, with a smile, for a reasonable price. It's no longer a place I suggest to friends, and I suspect it won't be in business too long, either.

``This is the best sushi place in town. They add small touches that make the difference. Few Japanese restaurants work so hard at freshness and adding small details such as toasted seeds dusting the rolls.''
