``That this restaurant is mentioned at all in these pages is a mystery. This restaurant abuses the reputation of our favourite food, but is nowhere near to the real thing. Yes, they serve makis, but that's it. People come here to smoke and chat, the food is not the main thing. The staff is inept at handling the food and the kitchen is glass cubicle where two hard working people routinely assemble rolls with second if not third rate ingredients. The most used ingredients are imitation surimi, mayonnaise and lettuce. The lighting and ambiance of the place fits a late night bar. You won't be able to tell what's on your plate, and if your dinner guests knew chances are you would not understand what they are saying given the noise level. The general smokiness makes eating impossible. The staff is well-intentioned but theirs atmospheric smiles and greetings fit a fashion boutique or a beauty parlour with a touch too much self-esteem. Don't eat here!''
About Mikuni Japanisches Restaurant (Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany)

Variety of sushi: Somewhat broader than average.
|
Promptness of service: Notably attentive.

``This is definitely the best sushi restaurant in Frankfurt. There is a real counter with two chefs, the owner always on the left, the excellent (and less temperamental) Ni-ban on the right. The restaurant is very well frequented by many international expats from the banking community in town. These appreciating customers are almost all regulars. Very noticeable beside the high quality nigiri and sashimi, are the many specials, occasionally exotic items, that are announced on Japanese-only note cards behind the counter. Among the starters classic preparations of vegetables are surprisingly good. Readers from this page will know that density and texture from the rice being used is fundamental in judging this food. This is where Mikuni shows its real class. The restaurant has one tatami room, but in general the place is in need of some redecoration, but with food so focused, I don't care. A lavish sitting at the counter with let's say three starters and the chef's choice of nigiri and maki, plus beer and tea, will be 60 to 80 euro. ''
